EVENT DESCRIPTION
South Auckland Youth Association is proactively involved in activities and events that extend its multicultural community. There is a mosque on Great South Road in Otahuhu, Mangere which has several initiatives to reach and engage youth, men and women to keep them close and safe in the community. As part of the religious activities, the Association encourages young minds to attend the five-time scheduled prayers in the mosque regularly and try extra-curricular activities such as learning Quran Sunnah training sessions for both male and female members on different schedules through the week. Aside from religious activities, the mosque involves youth in the community-led initiatives to get involved in cleaning the premises of the mosque, cutting grass regularly at the Auckland Memorial Garden's graveyard and sections, cleaning and promoting sports and good health.
There is a team of 15 volunteers from Jamia al Mustafa Masjid under the supervision of Haji and some members who are involved in the initiative for almost a decade – they not only work together but also encourage the teenagers to join them in this noble cause. South Auckland Muslim Association's Women are also proactive in sports events partaking in netball tournaments and have won games on several occasions. Some of the Madrasah children are also involved in Football tournaments, competing in the New Zealand Sports Association Muslim Association from different regions of Auckland and North Island and have won medals and trophies from SAMA.
Around the month of Ramadan, a Hafiz-e-Quran (a person who has learned the whole Quran) attends the scheduled Taraweeh prayers. The mosque also hosts several open iftar events on the mosque premises and invite Muslims and non-Muslims to partake in eating like a family and learn more about Islam and its teachings. The mosque also partakes in the Islam Awareness Week Program and opens its gates to hosting a Mosque Open Day on the last day of IAW, an event inviting the extended communities to visit the mosque and interact with volunteers.
