EVENT DESCRIPTION
Navratri is a providential festival of Hindus celebrated with great reverence and is one of the earliest festivals that dates to the ancestral eras. It is widely celebrated in India and other parts of the world for nine consistent day and night. Navratri carries different values across India and is aligned with the lunar calendar, which is why it is celebrated in March or April as Chaitra Navratri or in September or October as Sharad Navratri.
Navratri is a time when people from villages and cities congregate to perform puja on mini shrines, which represent different aspects of goddess Durga, including goddess Lakshmi and goddess Saraswati. Devoted worshippers chant mantras and renditions of bhajans and folk songs, usually accompanied by puja rituals for the entirety of Navratri.
Navratri derives from two words: 'nava’ meaning nine, and 'rati’ meaning night. The popular legend connected to Navratri highlights the remarkable battle between the powerful demon Mahishasura and goddess Durga. In India, Navratri brings about a great number of people and forms of devotion across the country while retaining the common underlying theme of good over evil.
